Ein Haus für den Kubismus.
"Ich habe bei Ihnen einen 'Rahmen für meine Sammlung' bestellt. Sie liefern mir ein
'Gedicht aus Mauern'." Raoul La Roche in einem Brief an Le Corbusier. Als Raoul La
Roche zwischen 1921 und 1923 Kunstwerke der Sammlung von Wilhelm Uhde und Bestände der
Galerie von Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler ersteigerte, legte er das Fundament der wohl
bedeutendsten kubistischen Privatsammlung, die er bis 1928 durch Ankäufe in der Galerie
de l'Effort von Leonce Rosenberg noch erweiterte. Die rund 160 Gemälde, Papiers colles,
Zeichnungen, Aquarelle und Skulpturen der Sammlung zeugen gleichermaßen vom
hochkarätigen Ensemble wie von La Roches entschiedener Vorstellung von der
Geschlossenheit seiner Sammlung. Im Jahre 1923 errichtete Le Corbusier in Auteuil die
Villa La Roche, in der die Werke der Pariser Avantgarde einen angemessenen Raum fanden.
Das Gebäude gilt als Gründungsbau der modernen Architektur, grundlegende Elemente und
Schlüsselbegriffe - etwa die Konstruktion auf Stützen und die "promenade
architecturale" - erscheinen in der Architektur Le Corbusiers erstmals im
Zusammenhang mit der Pariser Villa, deren Baugeschichte ausführlich dokumentiert wird.
Die reich illustrierte Publikation eröffnet in Texten renommierter Autoren einen Einblick
in die Geschichte der Sammlung und der Villa und stellt die Persönlichkeit Raoul La Roche
vor. Raoul La Roche (Basel 1889-1965 Basel). 1911 Übersiedlung nach Paris. 1918 lernte er
Le Corbusier kennen und kam durch ihn und dessen Malerfreund Amedee Ozenfant in Kontakt
zur aktuellen Pariser Kunstszene. Raoul La Roche begann 1918 im Alter von 29 Jahren zu
sammeln und beendete 1928 seine Sammeltätigkeit. 1962 Rückkehr nach Basel.

The Cubist Epoch
Cubism originated in Paris between 1906 and 19O8 and was the creation of Picasso and
Braque, a Spaniard and a Frenchman. Within four years, however, the pictorial methods and
technical innovations of these two young painters had been seized on by other artists in
France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Russia and England. Thus Cubism, the
first fundamental reevaluation since the Renaissance of what artists should record in
their works of art and how they should do it, rapidly became the most influential movement
in Western art in the first half of the 20th century, continuing to affect the pictorial
method of most major artists until the 1940s. This book was first published to accompany a
major exhibition curated by the author at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in
1970. Douglas Cooper had himself known well the principal protagonists in the Cubist
Movement, owned works by them and written extensively on the subject. The exhibition was
mounted when many of the artists, dealers, writers and collectors who created and
furthered the development of Cubism were still alive to act as primary documentary
sources. It brought together from the collections of Europe and America Cubist paintings,
sculptures, drawings and prints to present for the first time a vivid compendium of Cubism
as an historic and aesthetic achievement which transformed the visual world of the 20th
century. This re-issue of the book not only presents a record of an epoch-making show, but
provides an authoritative, informative and lively introduction to all aspects of Cubist
