John Soane: An Accidental Romantic

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) was one of the most influential,
if eccentric, English architects. Most of his designs were so radical for their time that
they were never built--just as well, some critics say. But in this ambitiously produced
but disappointingly illustrated biography (most of the reproductions are in
black-and-white), Gillian Darley champions this son of a bricklayer. Soane was a self-made
man who tended to be egotistic and quarrelsome; he displayed sufficient dilettantish
genius to discredit him in the eyes of his peers. Despite that, by 1800 he was rich and
successful--the personal architect to two prime ministers. He designed the Bank of
England, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and Westminster's Law Courts, as well as Britain's
beloved red telephone box. His unprecedented use of neoclassical elements and eclectic
styles gave Londoners a chance to marvel at theatrical effects and spatial trickery.
Soane's greatest achievement, though, remains his home in Lincoln's Inn Fields, which he
bequeathed to the nation upon his death. The Soane Museum is as complex and intriguing as
the man himself. If not for Darley's diligent research and sensitivity, readers wouldn't
know quite how troubled the man was behind this glorious facade. -- Lilian Pizzichini,

The Romantic Age in Britain (Cambridge Cultural History)

First published in hardback as Volume 6 in the Cambridge
Guide to the Arts in Britain series, this book is a comprehensive survey for students,
specialists and general readers of all major branches of the arts in Britain during the
period 1785 to 1851. It also reveals the cultural and social setting in which the writers,
musicians, architects and other artists of the age worked. Great transformations began in
this period, seen towards its end in the growth of industry, new scientific discoveries
and inventions, an upsurge in population and the emergence of a new bourgeois and working
class. In the arts, Blake, Keats, Wordsworth, Turner, Constable and Nash were prominent
and the cult of Handel flourished in musical circles (though there was a sudden dearth of
important native composers). The novel flowered with Jane Austen, Dickens and Scott and
British crafts and manufacturing design went on show in the Great Exhibition of 1851 as
products of "the workshop of the world". An introductory chapter paints the
cultural and social backdrop of the time. Fully illustrated chapters follow, each written
by a foremost expert, in which a major branch of the arts is explored in turn. Finally,
other contributions highlight topics of special cultural interest, for example the
development of the city of Edinburgh, field enclosure and its transformation of the
landscape, and a study of the Athenaeum Club in London.
