Art Deco Interiors : Decoration and
Design Classics of the 1920s and 1930s
By the time of the Paris exhibition of 1925 from which Art Deco took its name, the idea
that an interior and its furnishings should form a complete design - a "total
look" - dominated the thinking of both designers and their clients. Studios began to
emerge to serve the needs of a design and style-conscious middle-class. This text displays
the flourishing design ingenuity through contemporary photographs and illustrations of
selected interiors complemented with modern photographs of individual pieces. It traces
the sylistic evolution and dominant motifs of Deco, the triumph of the 1925 exhibition and
the pure "high style" of the Paris ensembliers; the growth of Streamline Moderne
offshoots in the US; the international revival of Deco as a decorative style for a new
generation of post-modern designers; and the restoration of many Art Deco interiors to
their original state.

Art Deco Style

Characterized by geometric shapes, stylized natural forms and the use of luxuriuos
materials Art Deco originated in France and spread quickly all over the globe during the
1930s. Interest in the style was revived in the 1960s, partly as a result of the work of
Bevis Hillier who recalls his triumphs and mistakes in writing the first book on the
subject and co-organizing the Minneapolis exhibition in 1971. Stephen Escritt's text deals
with recent scholarship and changing attitudes towards Art Deco, by charting its various
worldwide manifestations he demonstrates that the stle (although retrospectively labelled
a movement) had a coherance that lead to its international spread. The text is illustrated
with examples from all over the world, ranging from liners to letterboxes and from radios
to lampposts.

Art Deco Furniture : The French Designers

The Art Deco movement - with its emphasis on up-to-date individuality
combined with good taste, fine materials and exquisite workmanship - became all the rage
in France. Other countries produced their own versions of the style, but in furniture
especially, the French predominated: the world had not seen such creative design for 125
years; on the one hand, the virtuoso cabinet-making of Ruhlmann, on the other, the
brilliant originality of Gray and Legrain. Alastair Duncan introduces us to the work of
over eighty architects, furniture makers and interior designers. The colour and monochrome
photographs - almost all of them specially commissioned for this book - form a valuable
portfolio of Art Deco furniture which should be of special value to those seeking
comprehensive information about a design movement which has proved of lasting appeal both
to collectors and to the general public.

Ruhlmann : Master of Art Deco

Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann (1879-1933) was one of
the greatest French cabinet makers and decorators. He used rare woods for the framework of
his pieces, and ornamented them with ivory, tortoiseshell, lacquer, mirrors, silk and
tooled metals, and also applied his artistic taste to lamps, wall coverings, rugs, beds,
divans and cigar boxes, many of which are reproduced in this study of his life and work.
It encompasses examples from all areas of Ruhlmann's output, and includes many sketches.

Edgar Brandt : Master of Art Deco Ironwork

I llustrated with both period and new photographs, this is a study of the
Art Deco ironwork of Edgar Brandt (1880-1960), a leading creative force during a period of
remarkable achievement in French design. Brandt's grilles, screens, tables, lighting
fixtures and bronze vessels - highlights of the famous 1925 Exposition des Arts Decoratifs
et Industriels in Paris - are sought after today by collectors around the world. These and
the Brandt studio's larger commissions - for the ocean liner "Paris" and the Au
Bon Marche department store in Paris, among others - epitomize the Art Deco style. The
author explores Brandt's multifaceted career as a pioneering artist-metalsmith,
influential designer and successful entrepreneur.

Art deco
